Feller takes the helm of Maquoketa football

After Maquoketa High School football coach Riley Brockway stepped down as head coach last season, Maquoketa Athletic Director Colin Larson and the Maquoketa school board did not have to look very far for their new head coach.

After interviewing eight different candidates, Colton Feller climbed to the top of the list.

Feller was on former coach Kevin Bowman’s staff and most recently worked as an assistant on Brockway’s staff. Feller has been an assistant coach for the last 12 years. He has been a defensive coordinator, special teams coach, and freshman/sophomore linebacker coach.

After college, Feller returned to Maquoketa. “I had no idea what I was going to do for a job. I started as a strength coach and a substitute teacher.”

Feller has been a Maquoketa Middle School science teacher and a health and physical education teacher at the high school.

Feller just finished his seventh year as the Cardinals’ wrestling head coach and five years as an assistant coach, giving him a total of 12 years in the wrestling room.

“I am excited for next football season and keeping every assistant coach that is already on staff. I might make some changes here and there but, my main goal is to put players in the best possible positions to succeed,” Feller said.

Girls distance medley sets school record

track team ran two meets last week, both in a steady downpour. But the girls recorded some personal records (PR) and ran some season-best times last week.

Maquoketa finished second as a team in an eight-team field with 105 points at West Branch on April 8.

Cora Widel won the trifecta in the sprints. Widel won the 100m dash with a PR of 13.08. In the 200m dash, she ran to a first-place finish with a PR of 26.51, and in the 400m sprint placed first with a time of 1:01.90. Widel also ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x400m relay team with Natalie Hackman, Justice Armbruster and Isabel Hopson.

Natalie Hackman finished first in the 800m run, battling the field and the rain in a winning time of 2:23.10. The Cardinals’ other first-place finish came from freshman Hopson in the high jump with a PR jump of 5-03.

No team scores were kept Saturday at the Eastern Iowa Track and Field Festival in Iowa City, where it rained all day. The distance medley relay team of Millie Wing, Hopson, Widel and Hackman outran the field to finish first in a new school record time of 4:17.31.

Speedway to open with inaugural racing event

On Saturday, April 18, the Maquoketa Speedway at the Jackson County Fairgrounds will open the 2026 racing season with a first-ever racing event on the ¼-mile dirt track.

The wild and wooly 410 Sprint cars of the Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Car Series will fly around the track. This inaugural event will be sure to provide an action-packed night of 900 horsepower on display as a new track record will most likely be set.

In addition to the Sprint Cars, the opening night of point racing will be held in the IMCA Stock Car, Sportmod and Hobby Stock classes. Grandstands will open at 4 p.m., with hot laps slated to take the green flag at 5:30 p.m. and racing to follow.

A pre-race party and car show will be at Timber Lanes from noon until 3 p.m. Several drivers will be on hand with their new cars ready to hit the track.
